Abingdon TKD's Ninja Day

On the morning of 5th November 2011 Abingdon TKD students took part in a Martial Arts Extravaganza – Ninja day to raise funds for Save the Children, at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre in Abingdon. All the martial arts that use the leisure centre were invited to take part, these included Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kali / Escrima, Wing Chun, Karate, Judo, Kickboxing and of course Taekwon-do.

Each martial art was allocated 45 minute sessions, Abingdon TKD had two slots one mid-morning and one at the end, in the first session 30 plus participants enjoyed Mr Mat Carlile 2nd dan taking a quick warm up and on we went with the upbeat kicking and punching drills, to finish the session the children had the chance to break some 1⁄2 inch pieces of wood. The Taekwon-do students proved very apt at this and the children from the other arts were amazed at having the opportunity to take part in this.

For the second session, nearly everyone left at the event took part, Mr Carlile took another quick warm up and stretch, on we went with more kicking drills including front snap kick, turning kick, side kick and back kick, once everyone had a turn we moved on to jumping performing all the same kicks,(some of the other martial art were surprised by the vast array of kicks that TKD has to offer) after this it was again time for a bit of destruction during which 14 year old Dominic Miles 6th Kup performed flying side kick over 6 people, 12 year old Alfie Stribling 6th Kup performed flying high kick at the height of his finger tips, Mr Stuart Miles 1st Dan performed fore fist punch on a damp cold brick, various other techniques on bricks and wood were performed.

To finish off the 50 plus remaining participants performed Won Hyo Tul to my count, everyone enjoyed both sessions with the different arts all commenting on how dynamic Taekwon-do is.
£650 was raised for Save the Children.

Thank you to all the students and parents who support this event
